Rose and Lavender Cleansing Grains

This recipe by herbalist Colleen Hulett is great for those pressed for time. It’s easy to make and creates a two-in-one cleansing and exfoliating product.

The cleansing grains are a combination of ground almonds, oats, white clay and herbs. The powder is then moistened with rosewater a little at a time. If a week’s worth of moist cleanser is desired then honey is added to the paste. Honey will preserve the grains and is excellent for facials because it brings blood to the surface, removes impurities, smooths and softens the skin.

Rum Almond Cake

“RUMMY YUMMY!” Is how our tester described this cake! Made with almonds, whole wheat pastry flour, carob, maple syrup, honey, and molasses, there are lots of rich flavours. You can alter the flavours according to your own tastes. Our tester omitted the maple syrup and molasses so that the rum, honey and carob flavours would be more pronounced. If you don’t normally have rum on hand you can use a rum baking flavour as a substitute.

Two Christmas flavours in one great recipe! This gingerbread calls for either spelt or whole wheat flour. One of our visitors e-mailed us with a great review. She had to make it gluten and dairy-free which resulted in a softer texture, but aside from that she said it was delicious!

My friend Helen said this recipe was very good. Originally it called for 1/8 cup amaranth grain. Helen used amaranth flour instead. I’m not sure how it would have turned out with the grain – a little crunchier, perhaps. I modified the ingredients to include amaranth flour. If you try it with the grain, please let me know how you like it. With such a small amount of amaranth in the recipe, I think this shortbread could be made without it. If you have it on hand and like the flavour then go ahead and add it. If not, a couple extra tablespoons of the other flours should suffice.
